Does the golden ratio really define a beautiful face?
The measurement is real; the claim built on it is not well supported. This calculator reports how close three facial proportions sit to phi (1.618), which is a fact about your face. The idea that phi defines beauty comes largely from Marquardt's phi mask, which has been criticised for being derived from fashion models rather than from populations.

What the facial golden ratio actually measures
Phi is 1.618033988… — the number you get when a line is divided so the whole relates to the larger part exactly as the larger part relates to the smaller. It turns up in enough natural growth patterns that Renaissance anatomists started applying it to faces, and cosmetic surgery inherited the habit.
This calculator measures three of those proportions: face height against cheekbone width, eye spacing against nostril width, and nose length against mouth width. Each gets its own number, because a single averaged figure hides which proportion is actually doing the work.
Your face phi ratio, measured three ways
Face length to width is the one people notice first — it governs whether a face reads as long, balanced or wide. Eye spacing to nose width sets the horizontal rhythm of the midface. Nose length to mouth width sets the vertical rhythm of the lower face.
A face can sit close to phi on one and far on another, and that pattern is more informative than the average. Two people with the same overall score frequently have opposite profiles.
Golden proportion of the face — what the research actually supports
The honest position: phi is a convention, not a law. Studies that measure attractive faces against 1.618 find the correlation weak and inconsistent, and some published work argues that averageness and symmetry predict perceived attractiveness better than any single ratio does.
What phi is genuinely useful for is being a fixed reference. Because the target never moves, the number means the same thing on every face and in every photo — which makes it a measurement you can compare rather than an opinion you have to trust.

Why celebrity golden ratio scores are usually nonsense
Articles claiming a specific actor scored 94.1% on the golden ratio are almost always measuring a retouched press photo shot on a long lens under controlled light. Change the focal length and the same face returns a different number, because perspective compresses or expands the very distances being measured.
For a reading you can actually compare over time, keep the conditions constant: straight on, arm's length, even light, no filter. The measurement is precise; the photograph is the loose part.
Tips for an accurate golden ratio measurement
- Face the camera squarely — all three ratios are frontal measurements and rotation invalidates them.
- Keep the same distance every time you re-run it. Focal length changes the perspective compression that these ratios are measuring.
- Neutral expression. A smile widens the mouth, which directly moves the nose-to-mouth ratio.

What is a good golden ratio face score?
Most faces land between 70 and 90 on the individual ratios. Scores above 90 on all three are genuinely uncommon, and a single low ratio pulls the average down more than people expect.
Does the golden ratio really determine facial beauty?
No. It correlates weakly and inconsistently with perceived attractiveness in published research. Symmetry and averageness track better. Phi's value here is that it is a fixed reference, so the number is comparable between photos and between people.
Why is my face phi ratio different in another calculator?
Different tools pick different landmark points for the same named measurement — some use the hairline for face length, others the brow. Neither is wrong, but the numbers are not interchangeable.
Does it work on a side profile?
No. All three ratios are frontal measurements, and a profile photo puts the landmarks on the wrong plane. Use a straight-on shot.
Can I improve my golden ratio score?
The proportions are skeletal, so grooming and expression will not move them. What changes them is volume — filler, implants, rhinoplasty. The simulation feature exists to show that change before you commit to it.
