Wide Lips

Width is a separate axis from fullness, and confusing the two is the most common mistake in lip charts. A wide mouth with average lip height reads as thin, and a narrow mouth with the same height reads as full — the height did not change.

The panel measures all four lip axes and says where a wide mouth sits among them.

Straight-on, even lighting, at arm's length gives the most comparable reading.

How a wide mouth is measured

Drawn from the four measurements the tool takes — total fullness, the upper-to-lower ratio, Cupid's bow depth and the corner angle. It is a diagram, not a photograph, so nothing here is a claim about a particular mouth.

Mouth width against face length. A classic reference places the mouth corners roughly below the inner edges of the irises, which the tool can compare directly.

  • Mouth corners sitting further apart relative to face size
  • Lips can read as thinner at the same absolute height, purely from proportion
  • Completely independent of volume, border definition and corner angle

Wide describes mouth width against face width, and it is entirely independent of fullness — a wide mouth can be thin or full. It is also the least emotionally loaded of the six labels and the least searched, which are probably related. Mouth width is skeletal and stable; it does not change with weight or with age.

How to tell if you have a wide mouth

  1. 1

Compare your mouth corners against the inner edges of your irises when looking straight ahead. The classic reference places them roughly in line.

  2. 2

Measure relaxed. Any smile widens the mouth substantially.

Makeup for a wide mouth

Wide-mouth technique concentrates attention toward the centre, which is the opposite of most lip advice.

Works

  • Colour concentrated in the centre and faded toward the corners
  • Liner stopped slightly short of the natural corners

Works against it

  • Liner extended past the corners
  • Uniform dark colour edge to edge, which emphasises the full width

What changes a wide mouth

Lipstick for a wide mouth

A wide mouth carries strong colour better than a narrow one, so the range of workable shades is broader.

  • Deep and bright shades both work; there is enough surface for the colour to read as intended
  • Keep the outer corners slightly softer if you want to shorten the read
  • A centred highlight draws attention inward, away from the width
  • Overlining at the corners extends a width that is already there

How to get a wide mouth

Mouth width is bone and muscle attachment, so this is the one lip measurement that essentially cannot be changed cosmetically.

  • No filler, technique or device widens or narrows a mouth by a measurable amount
  • Corner lip lift changes the ANGLE of the corners, not the distance between them
  • Makeup shifts the read by a few millimetres at most, through where the colour stops

How a wide mouth change with age

Mouth width is one of the most stable measurements on the face. What changes with age around it is corner position and lip volume, not the distance from corner to corner.

Wide Lips celebrities

Wide mouths get named in celebrity commentary far more often as a distinguishing feature than as a flaw, which is a rare thing in this subject. As with the rest of the site, no names are assigned here from photographs.

Wide Lips — frequently asked questions

Does a wide mouth run in families?

Mouth width follows the width of the underlying bone and the attachment of the muscles around it, both of which are inherited like any other skeletal proportion. It is one of the more heritable measurements on this page.

Is there an ideal mouth width?

The convention quoted most often puts mouth width at about half of face width, or roughly in line with the inner edges of the irises. It is a drawing rule from proportion studies rather than a measured norm, and populations scatter around it widely.

Does a wide mouth affect lip filler results?

It changes the arithmetic rather than the option. Fullness is measured as lip height against mouth width, so the same volume of filler moves the ratio less on a wide mouth than on a narrow one — which is why volume is discussed relative to your own mouth rather than in absolute terms.

Is a wide mouth attractive?

No published work ranks mouth width, and the preference varies enough across eras that any confident answer is quoting fashion. What the measurement does tell you is practical: a wide mouth carries strong colour better and needs a different lipstick approach from a narrow one.

Can a wide mouth be made narrower?

Not by any meaningful amount. Mouth width is set by bone and muscle attachment, and no filler, device or exercise changes it. Makeup shifts the read by a few millimetres through where the colour stops, and that is the whole available range.

Does mouth width change with age?

No. It is among the most stable measurements on the face. What changes around it is corner position and lip volume, which is why a wide mouth can read differently at fifty than at twenty without the width having moved at all.

What is considered a wide mouth?

One where the corners sit further apart relative to face size than average. The classic reference lines them up roughly with the inner edges of the irises.

Does a wide mouth make lips look thinner?

Yes, purely as proportion. The same lip height across a wider mouth reads as a thinner lip without any volume having changed.
