Soft Autumn

Warm · medium value · very muted

Warm and muted, with low contrast. Colours with a dusty, earthy finish sit best; clear brights look loud against you.

The Soft Autumn palette

  • Caramel
  • Moss
  • Toffee
  • Dusty terracotta
  • Olive
  • Clay
  • Sage green
  • Oat

Neutrals

  • Warm cream
  • Mushroom
  • Bark

Three that fight it

  • Black
  • Hot pink
  • Bright turquoise

Three, not thirty. A palette is a prediction about which tones lift your face, not a list of banned colours — and a long avoid-list is the fastest way to make a useful idea useless.

What makes a Soft Autumn

Soft Autumn is warmth without richness: a golden cast to the skin, medium-depth hair, and low contrast across the face. It shares its muting with Soft Summer and its warmth with True Autumn, which is why it is the season most often reached by elimination. Earthy colours with the saturation pulled down are the point.

Am I a Soft Autumn?

Test muting first, then temperature — in that order, because temperature is easier to misread on a muted face.

  • A clean bright colour should look better than you do in it. If so, you are muted.
  • Camel against grey-taupe in daylight: if camel warms the face and grey-taupe deadens it, you are warm.
  • Look for a golden or olive undertone at the jaw rather than a pink one at the cheek — cheeks are misleading on everyone.

Soft Autumn versus the seasons it is confused with

  • Soft Summer

Temperature. The most common confusion in the twelve. Camel versus grey-taupe decides it faster than any pink-versus-peach test.

  • True Autumn

Saturation. True Autumn carries rust and mustard at full strength; on a Soft Autumn those read as the loudest thing in the room.

Soft Autumn makeup

Warm, earthy and quiet.

  • Terracotta, soft peach and warm rose blush
  • Soft bronzes, olive and warm taupes on the eye
  • Warm brown liner; black is too hard for the contrast level
  • Soft brick, warm nude and muted coral on the lip

Hair colour for a Soft Autumn

Warm mid-brown, bronze, soft auburn and honey. Ash tones drop the warmth the season runs on; very dark shades manufacture contrast the face cannot support.

Gold or silver?

Brushed and antiqued gold, bronze, copper. Polished yellow gold is slightly too bright; silver reads cold.
